Ministry Update: Church Retreat in Barreiras, Bahia

Back towards the middle of 2023 we received an invitation to speak at the Carnaval retreat of the First Baptist Church in Barreiras, Bahia – attended by a former student of ours. At that time I was not pastoring a church, and there was no retreat of our own planned at the Mount Zion Camp, so Itacyara and I had no qualms about accepting the request. If you regularly read our updates here, you know that in the intervening months our pastors decided to hold a Carnaval retreat of our own, and I accepted the call to return to the Ebenezer church. Had I known about these events at the time, I would have probably declined the invitation. As it turns out, I’m glad I didn’t, because I would have missed a truly blessed time.

I had the privilege of bringing a series of messages on Evangelism.
A breakout session where people practiced explaining the Gospel to each other.
Itacyara also had opportunities to share with the ladies of the church.
The attendees of the retreat, on the final evening.
One of our favorite parts was making new friends…Vandilson (foreground) and his wife Grazie, and Pastor Valdemar and his wife…
…and Pastor Odirley, and his wife.

We also had the opportunity to refresh old friendships…

…Like Pastor Antônio, whom I met as a teenager in 1989, on my very first trip to Brazil…
…and Marcos and Edna, with whom I stayed on a survey trip to the city of Picos back in 2008.
…and of course our former student Renata, with her husband Josenildo, who were responsible for our invitation.
We also got to meet up with another former student, Sara, who lives in Barreiras as well.
This trip also afforded me the rare privilege of giving a puppet seminar.
The newly-minted puppeteers!
Besides the retreat and the puppetry seminar I also spoke at the Saturday youth meeting and Sunday School.

Our time there was very busy…but very profitable, and a blessing to Itacyara and myself. We returned to Maranhão (arriving yesterday) refreshed and ready to take on the various tasks that await us.
