Best of Brazil: Gruta da Lapinha

The Gruta da Lapinha is a spectacular series of caves located near the city of Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais. I had the opportunity to tour the caverns a couple weeks ago during some down-time from the annual Baptist Mid Missions, Brazil conference. Here are some of the amazing things we saw:

Descending into the bowels of the earth.
Amazing stone design in the cave ceiling.
Stalactites and stalagmites…like a grand pipe organ.
Alien landscapes.
We were told not to put our hands on the cavern walls because of spiders. If you look closely, you can see one in this picture.
The caverns are very well-maintained, with well-constructed walkways.
The green on this formation is caused by organisms that grow when the area is illuminated.

These are not the first Brazilian caverns we have talked about here. Our friend and colleague Tim Reiner visited some in the state of Piaui, and shared his pictures with us here and here.
