Brazil

Photos from Triunfo

The annual conference of our BMM Northeast Region was held in the city of Triunfo, Pernambuco this year. (More about the conference later…) I was able to spend an afternoon in this charming historical city with Tim and Vicki Reiner, and get some interesting pictures. (Thanks Tim and Vicki for the use of your camera!)

Triunfo is an old town (originally settled by the Dutch), and the historical buildings have been very well preserved, as can be seen above.

Of course, the centerpiece of the town is this beautiful church.

Triunfo is also famous for being a hideout of Lampião, well-known outlaw here in the nordeste back in the early part of the 20th century. Today the city is home to one of the many “Outlaw Museums” scattered throughout the region. This one was very interesting, full of guns and other artifacts from those turbulent times.

I was also surprised to find that the interior of Pernambuco has a longstanding film and theater tradition. In Triunfo there is a large and ornate theater, and in the lobby is this ancient movie camera.

The city of Triunfo also has its own–somewhat bizarre–Carnaval traditions. People dress up in outfits like the one above, and wear masks called caretas. Then they walk around with whips and try to knock off other people’s masks…with the whips.

In a town seemingly stopped in time somewhere in the early twentieth century, I was surprised to turn a corner and find this airplane on display, clearly from the late twentieth century.
Triunfo is the kind of town where, if I had a month to spare, I could spend it just exploring all the nooks and crannies, and still not learn all the interesting things about it. And the cool thing about Brazil is that it is filled with such places.
