Field Update: Pastor Francivaldo and the Raposa Church Plant
When first we arrived in São Luís and began working with Pastor Francisco at the Kerigma congregation, we met an earnest young man named Francivaldo. He was a leader in the youth group, and very active in the church. When, a year later, we began the Ebenezer congregation, Francivaldo joined us. Soon after that he began his studies at the Cariri Baptist Seminary. Upon his graduation he joined a national mission agency, raised support, and returned to Ebenezer to work with us there, first as my assistant, then as full-time pastor of the church. During this time he met and married Géssica.
A year ago he led the Ebenezer church to call its first non-missionary pastor, then moved to the other side of our island to begin a new church plant in the fishing village of Raposa. There they have been faithfully making contacts and laying the groundwork for a future congregation. This month God provided them with a rented facility that will be the first home of their church-plant.
We are excited about this project for a number of reasons…chief of among them is that this marks the fourth congregation to be started in São Luís since we arrived in 2011, bringing the total of churches in our state association to six.
And then of course there is the privilege that we have had to watch Francivaldo grow and develop, and take on this challenge. Pray for Francivaldo and Géssica as they carry out this key work in our region.
