Best of Brazil: The City of Santos, São Paulo

Our previous Best of Brazil posts have featured a couple interesting things to be found in the city of Santos. For this last post in the series featuring our travels at the beginning of 2023 we will feature pictures of some other interesting things we saw and did in Santos.

Trolley Ride

As with many older cities, Santos once had an extensive trolley line. Evidences of it can be seen all over the city. Now there is just one active branch, that exists only for tourists. It was a short, but fun, ride.

There are a couple defunct trolley cars that serve as decorations in Santos.

Pele!

If you are any kind of soccer fan you will recognize the name “Santos” as the team for which the late soccer great Pele played, when he wasn’t winning World Cups for the Brazil squad. There is now a very interesting museum in Santos (right across from the trolley station) dedicated to his memory.

The museum contains many photos from Pelés life, including this meeting with Bobby Kennedy.

Vintage Autos

As Providence would have it, there was a period movie being filmed in Santos on the day we visited, and antique cars abounded.

They don’t make ’em like this anymore.
When technology was also beautiful.

Not part of the filming, but seen as we walked the streets of Santos.
Even the dash boards were beautiful.
Hey…one can dream!
And I had to include this beautifully preserved “fusquinha” that colleague Tim Reiner found.

Beach Front

It was a drizzly day when we went to the beach, but there were still some pretty cool things to see.

If you look closely, you can see a cruise ship in the mist.
My writers brain made up all kinds of stories for this little island.
The skyline of Santos. If you squint, you might be able to make out some of the famous “leaning apartments”.

Boat Ride

There are several options for boat rides in Santos. This was one of the highlights of our trip.

Friends from central Florida (specifically, Auburndale) will recognize the name “Cutrale” – a Brazilian citrus company. This is one of their ships.

Santos is a wonderful city, and it is high on our list of places to visit again.
