Best of Brazil: Epic Motorcycle Chase
Some may question my inclusion of this in a “Best of Brazil” post. After all, it’s an outlaw fleeing police and committing numerous traffic violations in the process.
But every time I watch it, all I see are two artists at work. The guy in front leads the police on a wild five-minute chase through the city of Osasco, seamlessly weaving in and out of traffic, swerving to narrowly miss oncoming vehicles, all the while with his girlfriend (one assumes) hanging on for dear life. Throughout he has the precision and poise of a ballet dancer.
And for his part the motorcycle cop does not give up. Rather he matches swerve for swerve, blind turn for blind turn, speed for speed. There’s a certain rhythm and symmetry to the whole thing.
Another tribute to the artistry of the protagonists is that, (spoiler alert) at the end everybody is still alive.
I have no idea what happened afterward, but I can imagine a scenario where, the cop takes the reformed bandit under his wing, and together they team up to fight crime on their motorcycles.
