Reading List for June, 2020: Tolkein and Manchester…and no more.
Wow…only two books this month. I really must read shorter books!
The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm by William Manchester and Paul Reid
I have finally completed Manchester’s three-volume series on Winston Churchill. I was a little apprehensive upon beginning this last volume, as Manchester only lived long enough to compile the material and collaborate with co-author Paul Reid for one month before passing away. I needn’t have worried. Reid does an outstanding job of matching Manchester’s style and flow, and the result is a majestic finish to a masterful series.
As I finished the last paragraphs this morning, I found myself mourning – not just at the tragic decline and end of an epic life, but for the world, which has no such great leader today.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein
After introducing my boys to Lewis, I figured the natural step was to familiarize them with Tolkein. I was right. My boys highly enjoyed The Hobbit, and I was reminded of many parts I had forgotten these long years since I first read it.
So enthused were they, in fact, that we followed up with a Lord of the Rings movie marathon. My guys were always pointing out details in the movies that were directly related to The Hobbit.
